Sandpaper Storage

With my woodwork I use a lot of sandpaper, both by hand and in my power sanders.

For hand sanding – originally I used to buy sheets of Sandpaper and keep it in a drawer and then have to sort through it to find the grit I needed. Then I discovered the rolls of 100mm wide sandpaper at the Big Green Shed and started using those, but storage was still in a drawer. The rolls were certainly more economic as I wasted less and didn’t buy a new one until I had almost depleted an existing roll, whereas with the paper I would buy packs of mixed grit sheets and end up with some grits just sitting around for years.

So to move away from the storage drawer approach, I made myself a small caddy with the rolls on dowels from which they could be unrolled and cut to whatever length I needed. I still have lots of the older sheet sandpaper, so I included a shelf for them. Hopefully over time I will deplete the sheet sandpaper and only need the rolls.

For my Palm Sanders and Random Orbital Sanders I used to keep the sanding sheets with the machines. But with a number of machines of each type those sheets would end up spread across several different locations. Additionally, I didn’t have them stored according to grit size, so I would have to look through a pile of sheets to find the grit I wanted. My solution for this was to make a small wall mounted set of shelves with a shelf for each type & grit of paper. I can also easily see what my stock level is.
